Nautical term\u00a0 –\u00a0 translation<\/p>\n
AC – Alternating Current.<\/p>\n
DC – Direct Current.<\/p>\n
Valve – Faucet or valve.<\/p>\n
Anti-fouling – Paint for underwater hull.<\/p>\n
Portside – Left side of the ship (when looking in the ship’s direction of travel).<\/p>\n
Starboard – Right side of the ship (when looking in the direction of the ship’s travel).<\/p>\n
Hull penetration – A penetration through the hull of the ship for water outlet e.t.c.<\/p>\n
Ground hoist – Anchor and anchor chain line.<\/p>\n
Reserve Clutch – The ‘gearbox’. This reverses the direction of the rotation of the propeller to enable forward and reverse motion. Often the gerabox also contains a reduction: the engine turns at a higher speed than the propeller shaft.<\/p>\n
Lensing – The act of getting \/ pumping \/ scooping water out of the boat.<\/p>\n
Leeward – Where the wind blows to.<\/p>\n
Windward side – Where the wind comes from.<\/p>\n
Propeller – The propeller provides propulsion in the water.<\/p>\n
R.p.m. – Revolutions per minute.<\/p>\n
Rudder ‘on board’ – Maximum rudder angle.<\/p>\n
Rudder stock – The shaft of the rudder blade.<\/p>\n
